Good to know

Media blasting is a surface-preparation process that uses compressed air to fire an abrasive 'media' at a surface to strip away whatever's stuck to it — paint, rust, failed sealer, coatings, marine growth, grime and corrosion — without harming the material underneath. 'Media' just means the abrasive we choose: crushed glass, baking soda, garnet, sand or a dustless wet mix. We match the media and air pressure to the job, so the same shop that strips antifouling off a fiberglass hull can also clean delicate aluminum, steel, concrete, pavers, travertine, brick or wood. The goal is a clean, properly profiled surface that's ready to coat or seal.

They're all the same basic idea — abrasive driven by compressed air — but each uses different media for different jobs. Traditional sandblasting uses a hard, aggressive abrasive and cuts fast, which is great for heavy steel and stubborn rust but too harsh for soft surfaces. Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is gentle enough for thin metal, aluminum, gelcoat and chrome and leaves no heat distortion. Dustless (wet) blasting injects water into the stream, which knocks down dust by up to ~90%, suppresses sparks and keeps surfaces cooler. 'Media blasting' is the umbrella term that covers all of them — we pick the right one for your surface rather than forcing one method onto every job.

Dustless blasting (also called wet blasting) mixes water with the abrasive so the dust cloud is dramatically reduced — often around 90% less airborne dust than dry sandblasting. That matters in SW Florida because so much of our work happens in tight, populated spots: marinas, boatyards, driveways, lanais, parking lots and occupied buildings where flying dust isn't an option. Less dust means easier containment, far less cleanup, and the ability to work near cars, pools, landscaping and neighbors. The water also keeps surfaces cool, which protects thin metal and gelcoat from heat distortion. Learn more on our dustless blasting page.

No — not when it's done right. The single biggest factor is matching the media and pressure to the material. For soft or thin surfaces like fiberglass gelcoat, aluminum sheet metal, chrome, sheet-metal car panels and lower units, we use gentle media such as soda or fine crushed glass and lower pressure, and we always test on an inconspicuous spot first. Because dustless and soda methods run cool, there's no heat warping the way an aggressive dry sandblast on thin metal can cause. Aggressive abrasives are reserved for hard, durable surfaces like structural steel, heavy machinery and concrete.

Yes, with the right approach. Pavers, travertine, brick and concrete are common SW Florida surfaces — driveways, pool decks, lanais and walkways — and they hold onto old sealer, paint overspray, tire marks, mildew and coatings that pressure washing alone won't lift. We use a controlled, lower-pressure blast (often a dustless mix) that removes the failed sealer and buildup without pitting or chewing up the stone, then leave it clean and ready to re-seal. For sealed surfaces specifically, see our paver sealer removal page.

We come to you. SWFL Media Blasters is fully mobile — we bring the compressor, media and containment to your boatyard, marina, dry-storage facility, driveway, garage, jobsite, lanai or commercial property anywhere across Southwest Florida. There's no shop to haul a boat, trailer, car frame, gate or piece of equipment to. For larger or fixed items like a hull on stands, a driveway, a fence or structural steel, mobile service is usually the only practical option, and it's how we work every day.

Almost anything that has a coating, rust, paint or buildup that needs to come off. On the marine side: boat hulls, bottom paint, barnacles, running gear, props, trailers and outboards. Automotive and equipment: car and truck frames, body panels, rims, parts, trailers, motorcycles, heavy machinery and rusted metal. Residential: pool cages and lanais, fences, gates, railings, driveways, pavers, patios, brick, stucco and wood. Commercial: structural steel, tanks, equipment, parking structures and graffiti removal. Materials include fiberglass and gelcoat, aluminum, steel, concrete, pavers, travertine, brick and wood. We choose from several abrasives depending on the surface and the contamination we're removing. Crushed (recycled) glass is a sharp, eco-friendly all-rounder that strips paint and coatings cleanly. Baking soda is gentle and non-sparking — ideal for gelcoat, thin metal and chrome. Garnet is a hard, fast-cutting natural mineral for heavy rust and steel. Traditional sand is reserved for the most aggressive structural jobs. And our dustless (wet) setup adds water to nearly any of these to cut dust and heat. Picking the right media is most of what separates a clean strip from a damaged surface.

Each has its place, but blasting does what the others can't. Pressure washing only removes loose surface grime, slime and dirt — it leaves failing paint, rust and old sealer firmly attached. Hand sanding and grinding are slow, gouge soft surfaces, throw clouds of (sometimes toxic) dust, and can't reach into chines, contours, corners and textured surfaces. Media blasting removes 100% of the coating in a controlled pass, reaches into tight and intricate areas, and leaves the exact surface profile that new paint, sealer or coatings are designed to bond to. The result is a longer-lasting finish with far less labor afterward.

Yes — that's the 'Coat it' in our motto, Blast it. Prep it. Coat it. Bare metal, fresh-blasted gelcoat and stripped concrete are all vulnerable if they're left exposed, especially in our humid, salty coastal air, so we can apply protective coatings, primer, paint, barrier coat or fresh sealer right after we prep. Coating immediately also gives the new finish the cleanest possible surface to bond to. Tell us the result you want and we'll quote the full blast-prep-coat package, not just the strip.

Pricing depends on the size of the job, the surface and material, how much paint or rust is built up, access, and whether you want coating afterward — so we quote each project individually rather than posting a flat rate that wouldn't be honest. The best way to get a real number is a free on-site estimate: we look at the actual surface, tell you the method and media we'd use, and give you a clear price and timeline up front with no surprises. Call or text us at (239) 227-1768, or reach out through our contact page. Texting a few photos of the boat, vehicle, driveway or surface speeds things up — we can often give you a ballpark before we even arrive. From there we schedule a free on-site visit to confirm the scope, method and price. We're available Monday through Saturday, 8a to 6p.

It can be, and we work to keep it that way. We favor recycled and eco-friendly abrasives like crushed glass and baking soda, and our dustless method uses water to suppress airborne dust by roughly 90%, which keeps particles out of the air around marinas, homes and businesses. We contain the work area, follow facility and yard rules, and handle cleanup of the spent media so your property isn't left a mess. Dramatically less drifting dust than open dry sandblasting is one of the main reasons clients choose us for occupied and waterfront sites.

We're based in Naples (34104) and serve all of Southwest Florida, including Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Golden Gate. Because we're mobile, we travel throughout the region to boatyards, marinas, homes, jobsites and commercial properties. See our full service area for details, and reach out if your location is nearby — we'll let you know.

Most projects are completed in a single day. Smaller jobs — a car frame, a gate, a section of fence or a single hull — can take just a few hours, while larger or heavily-coated surfaces, full driveways or commercial steel may run longer. Access, the number of paint or coating layers built up, and whether you've added coating to the job all factor in. We'll give you a firm timeline along with your free estimate so you can plan around it.

We're open Monday through Saturday, 8a to 6p. The fastest way to reach us is to call or text (239) 227-1768 — texting photos of your project helps us respond quickly.
