The Caloosahatchee runs along the whole south edge of North Fort Myers, canals cut back from it into the residential streets, and a large share of properties have a seawall, a dock, a davit or a lift somewhere on the lot. That water is brackish and it moves, so it carries salt inland on the tide and it grows things on anything left sitting in it.
Away from the water the character changes fast. Manufactured home communities and older block houses sit alongside newer builds, carports and aluminum screen rooms are everywhere, and there is a working streak to the area: boat trailers, utility trailers, work trucks, project vehicles and equipment parked at the house rather than at a yard somewhere. Both halves of North Fort Myers hand us the same underlying problem, which is a finish that has failed and a substrate that needs to be clean and sound before anything new goes on.
